My paternal grandmother spent most of her life as a homemaker and she is still an avid knitter and quilter to this day which initially inspired the medium of hand sewing as well as the themes of inheritance of gendered traditions like homemaking. The subject matter also came from visiting my grandmother because while she and I have a good relationship, her home is definitely not my home and living with her, while by no means unpleasant, was a surreal experience that carried a strange and profound sense of loneliness. Thus, this piece, which is of the view from my bathroom window at my father’s flat in Germany, aims to capture a similar feeling: the quest to define what home means to me despite the previously transient nature of my home life.
