Restful

Restful

Restful is a poem by Hopewell Valley Central High School junior Edison Hicks & was published in Panorama, the literary arts magazine.

Restful

He looks at the one tree losing all its leaves and can’t help but see himself
And stuck in his bed, unrest in his head, he never will ask for help
All the other trees have not yet decayed and he knows they never can
A seasonal switch that can not be fixed has already gone out of hand
Reminded of writing that exists in a magazine somewhere inside of his mind
He looks for a savior, something to deliver him from the despair he finds

The collection of paint in his closet, once unused, is starting to dry
Yet there is another place in which his soul could learn to fly
Words enter and exit his brain, but he has no time to write them down
And so he is left with endless attempts at salvation lying around
He’ll never give up, never lose hope, even if it seems foolish
He’d rather be searching for hope than wander a land, ultimately useless

The sink is pristine, then his morning routine will ruin the clean condition
So any attempt to slow his descent can’t be washed away or diminished
He looks at the mirror, it couldn’t be clearer that his fears are only his own
As he stares at the moon while repeating a tune, he knows now that he is alone
And yet all the stars, million of voices, never did leave his side
He might be alone, but he is not lonely, and his ambition will not be denied.
